I’m a slow talker.
I don’t think about it too much except when I need to edit a workshop or do any kind of content creation. I want all the pauses taken out so the video will have the best chance of holding someone’s attention. We live in a world where even a breath at the beginning of a reel will cause someone to scroll.
I heard a podcast host take a long pause and apologize for it. Her guest kindly said …
“I look forward to pauses because I know something deeper is coming afterwards.”
As a pauser from way back, this caught my attention.
I’ve been deleting the pauses trying to be more informative when the pauses themselves are the very things that enhance the informing. Besides their role in giving us time to go deeper in our meaning or to emphasize a point before we speak, pauses in the form of blocks of time away from the chaos give us time to replenish. When we replenish, we create.
Here we are at the end of a year and we’ve done some hard work, reached high for lofty goals and moved through emotional landmines.
Consider giving yourself permission to pause.
Take a nap. Sit by the fire with a cup of tea. Pet your dog and stare at the Christmas tree lights. Stroll in the park and leave your apple watch at home.
Hit pause this holiday season. Deepen into the space below the surface, way down to the calm knowing that is your most spiritual place. Be still. Remember your voice so you can share it with us.
I’m taking back my pauses … because sometimes words aren’t enough.
Have a beautiful holiday season,
