Kindness Matters

People are starving for kindness.

I feel it in my bones … because I am too.

I do my best to go to one organized class at the gym on Tuesdays.  It’s called Ultra Fit and it incorporates balance, weights, and anaerobic activities … probably why I only go once a week!

I try to get the treadmill on the very end, close to all the “gear” I’ll need for class.

Maybe I have a problem with efficiency, maybe not.

Anyway … at the end of a grueling class, I was cooling down on my treadmill with a slow walk and an older gentleman had started to put his bosu away. (You know, the blue balance thing that looks like half of an exercise ball?)

As he was walking by me I blurted out “Good job! Good job!”  I don’t know why I did that because nobody talks to each other in this class.

I don’t even remember if he said anything, but we definitely made eye contact.  After putting his gear away, the man had to walk back by and then, surprisingly, he picked up my bosu and put it away.

Then … he picked up my exercise ball and put that away too!

I know I’m making a big deal out of this, and granted you’re reading an email from a girl who once went out with a guy who opened a bottle of water for her …

I mean, the ripple effect of just breaking the ice and saying something kind to a person played out before me in such a sweet way.

A person I look up to who I’ve never met, is the author of Unreasonable Hospitality, Will Guidara.  He quotes his dad as saying “What does right look like?  Do that.”

I love that quote and it inspires me to adopt it in this way:

“What does kind look like?  Do that.”

Y’all have a great day and stay creatively hydrated,
